The Ranger rolled down the highway at just over the posted speed limit. I kept my eyes roving from the road to the surrounding area keeping an eye out for trouble. "everything seems fine in this sector, over" i said into my Ranger's radio
Meanwhile, in a laboratory about a block away, a balding scientist typed furiously on a keyboard. The lab was built in an abandoned warehouse so as not to attract attention, and in the middle of this warehouse sat two large obelisks tilted towards one another. Several cables protruded from the bottom of the towering metal structures. A shorter man wearing a lab coat stood by a steel girder. He had his hand on a lever connected to a large circuit breaker box.
"Now," The balding scientist began. "Let's change the destiny of mankind. Throw the switch Dr. Paplaski."
"Yes, Walter." The smaller scientist said as he moved the lever downward into the on position.
The power came to life with a loud buzz, and immediately bolts of energy shot from one obelisk peak to the other.
"The doorway to our future is about to open." The scientist said as he eagerly watched as the energy began to meet between the obelisks.
"Walter!" The scientist yelled over the loud pops of energy. "Something's wrong, the power supply is fluctuating!"
"No! I can see it! The gate is opening!" He yelled in reply as a large blue ball of energy began to form between the obelisks.
"You're wrong, it's going to blow the capacitors and destroy the relays. I'm shutting it down." He said as he grabbed the power lever.
"No! We're too close! You can't-" but he was interrupted as a massive volt of electricity shot through his assistant, and immediately he dropped as his heart stopped. "No! It can't go wrong now! I've worked so hard ..."
As he realized his life's dream was coming apart in front of his eyes, the device exploded in a large blue ball of electricity. The structure around it was immediately displaced by the force, and the scientist vaporized. I looked to my left in shock when I heard the thunderous deafening boom. I saw the abandoned warehouse fly into hundreds of thousands of pieces.
"Scratch that , Code ... AAAAARRRRRRRGG"
a large blue bolt of electricity shot from the explosion and struck the hood of My Ranger.
I was blinded by the bright blue flash, and saw only a blur. I locked the brakes up out of instinct, but I felt the Ranger slide as though it was in mud, and then the Ranger stopped. I was thrust forward, but luckily, the five point harness caught me. I briefly lost consciousness, and when I awoke, I heard a voice calling out, " r ye OK M'lord?"
I slowly opened my eyes, and looked out of the windshield. I saw a horse drawn wagon standing on the side of the dirt road, and to my left an old man around 60 years old i guessed, dressed as an old time farmer, stood looking in at me. He didn't look dangerous nor did he seem to pose any threat so I unfastened the harness, opened the door, and climbed out of the Ranger.
I looked around, the land seemed to be mostly farm-land judging by the furrowed land on ether side of the narrow dirt road that I had ended up on, and seemed pretty uninhabited, except for the farmer.
"How the hell did I get in the country?"
I asked aloud to no one in particular, the farmer didn't understand what i was talking about so made no response. I got back into the Ranger and tried the radio and got nothing but static.
"Well, I don't have my phone with me, and it's not like it'd do any good 'cause I don't know where the hell I am. same with the radio but that might just be a loose wire or something fixable, I'll try to get it fixed in the next town. Hey you, farmer, how far is it to the next town with a garage?"
"Well, the nearest town what I'd know of be Sajar, but I don't know of any Gay-raj"
"right, well could you please show me the way to town?"
"just go that away till you come to the fork in the road then turn right" the farmer said pointing behind me.
"right, got it thank you very much my fine friend" i said as i climbed back into the Ranger and started the engine. I made a 3 point turn and drove off towards town taking a right at the fork in the road. I got into town at midnight every one was asleep so i pulled up to the inn, turned off the Ranger and knocked on the door.
a teenage girl opened the door.
"can i help you, Sir?" she asked standing in her nightgown holding a candle to see by.
"yes, my dear, I need a room for tonight and a vegetarian dinner, if it's no problem?"
"it's not a problem at all come in and I'll see what I can do for you" the maid said as she opened the door wider to admit me into the inn. "if you could just sign the register I'll give you the key to your room and then i'll bring the food up to you"
"Thank you, I very much appreciate this considering the lateness of the hour" I replied signing my name in the large book that lay open on the counter. The girl handed me a key with the number 009 scratched into it and went into the back of the inn leaving me to find my room, and seeing that the inn was only two floors high I figured that my room was on the ground floor. Finding my room I unlocked the door and went inside.
It was a comfortable room, small but comfortable a twin sized bed in one corner a small desk at the foot of the bed and a cupboard next to the desk. I took off my M16 and lean it near the head of the bed and i placed my sword next to it. I then took off my ammo belt and draped it across the back of the chair, hung up my survival vest in the cupboard same with my body armor's upper part, leaving me in my pants and my under-shirt. suddenly a timid knocking sounded on my door, I go over and open the door to reveal a girl even younger than the one that opened the inn's door for me, a sister i guessed, she handed me a tray with a vegetable soup and a bread roll.
"Thank you." I say and the young child squeaks and runs off down the hall. I shrug and go back into my room, put down my meal and continue to undress till all I have on are my under-clothes. I then sit down to eat. once I was finished eating i went to bed leaving my eye that was closest to the pillow open to prevent from being attacked.
